Dabing Xubian Teapot

160 cc — Laoduan  Cinnabar Clay · Huanglongshan ore · By Feng Haojie · After Shi Dabing’s iconic flattened-round form

The Xubian teapot, though simple in appearance, is one of the most challenging forms in Yixing pottery. Its difficulty lies not only in the demanding construction but also in the precise control of lines and proportions. This form was pioneered by Shi Dabing, who created the prototype using the “tiao sha” (blended sand) technique – a flattened round vessel that embodies the spirit of humility and ease. Master Feng Haojie has faithfully revived this classic, capturing the essence of the original while employing Huanglongshan Laoduan  Cinnabar Clay.

  • ▸ Extremely flat yet resilient body The body is very flat but not collapsed – it maintains a subtle tension. Every curve from the belly to the base is executed with precision, mirroring the original’s strength and elegance.
  • ▸ Concave lid (下凹壶盖) The lid surface dips inward – a notoriously difficult detail. Feng Haojie has replicated the original’s concave arc precisely. When viewed from above, the lid and body form concentric rings, creating a unique layered depth.
  • ▸ Flared spout (喇叭嘴) The spout flares slightly at the rim, tilting upward with a lively, elegant posture. It pours smoothly and adds a touch of refinement.
  • ▸ Delicate ear handle (鼓把) The rounded handle is slender and comfortable, perfectly balancing the spout. Its proportions match the original, contributing to the teapot’s overall harmony.
  • ▸ Laoduan clay character This aged Duan clay from Huanglongshan fires to a warm, earthy tone with a slightly sandy texture. It is subtle and elegant, preserving an antique charm while appealing to modern tastes. Excellent for oolongs, pu’er, and black teas.
Seasoning & care — Rinse with pure water after each session; avoid detergents. The Laoduan clay will develop a soft, dry patina. The concave lid and flared spout require gentle handling.
