How to judge true Yixing craftsmanship? This Shideng  teapot by Wang Jinxin is a perfect example. The skill lies in the details. The clay is a fine‑textured Zisha, firing to a warm, deep brown. The core of this piece is its ribbed  technique – each lobe is shaped by hand using a bamboo spatula (bi zi). The pressure must be exact: too light and the ribs lack dimension; too heavy and the body cracks. Unlike mass‑produced wares that use moulded clay to fake ribbing, this teapot’s texture is authentic and three‑dimensional.

• ▸ Hand‑ribbed lobes Each concave rib is individually formed using a bamboo spatula, requiring precise pressure control. The ribs run continuously around the body, extending to the mouth rim – perfectly aligned, with no distortion.
• ▸ Precise mouth rim The mouth rim follows the ribbed contour, a demanding step. Clay moisture must be exact; otherwise gaps appear that cannot be fixed later. Wang Jinxin’s control ensures the lid fits perfectly, with rib lines matching and no wobble when turned.
• ▸ Lion‑shaped knob (shī niǔ) The knob is carved as a lively little lion – vivid expression, sharp details. It echoes the “Stone Lantern” name without overwhelming the ribbed design.
• ▸ Three‑curve spout (sān wān liú) & round handle The spout curves gracefully; the circular handle offers a comfortable grip. The overall composition is balanced and functional.
• ▸ No superfluous decoration The teapot relies entirely on the ribbed pattern and the lion knob for its character – every element serves a purpose. It represents serious craftsmanship at a fair price point.
