YIXING CINNABAR CLAY · LIU YE SQUARE MASTERWORK New Arrival
Liufang Banyue Teapot
230 cc — Hongqing Cinnabar Clay · Hexagonal half‑moon / camel bell form · Ripe pu’er & dark tea companion
The Liufang Banyue (六方半月) is a rare square variant of the classic half‑moon teapot, also evoking the silhouette of a hexagonal camel bell. The hexagonal form represents the essence of Yixing square ware: crisp edges, symmetrical structure, and seamless joins. Every component—lid, body, and knob—follows a six‑sided geometry. From above, the hexagon is equally divided; from the side, the lines are clean, forceful, and rhythmically beautiful. This piece is masterfully executed by contemporary artisan Liu Ye, whose precision brings out the best of this demanding form.

- ▸ Rare hexagonal half‑moon The form is a hybrid: the belly swells like a half‑moon, but all lines are straightened into six crisp facets. From a camel bell to a rounded square, it is a unique and challenging design rarely seen in the market.
- ▸ Rigorous hexagonal construction Lid, body, and knob are all six‑sided. Viewed from above, the hexagon is perfectly divided into six equal segments. Side profiles show taut, upright lines with a rhythmic flow. The transition from belly to shoulder is smooth and natural.
- ▸ Spout & handle harmony The bulging belly leads to a six‑sided, one‑curve spout that rises confidently. The six‑sided ear‑shaped handle descends and tucks inward, creating a visual echo with the spout. All components adhere strictly to the hexagonal theme.
- ▸ Hongqing Cinnabar Clay This premium clay, known as “Hongqing” (red clear), is a type of Cinnabar Clay. It fires to a warm, rich reddish‑brown with a fine, smooth texture. It contains few impurities, offers exceptional breathability, and becomes increasingly red and lustrous with long‑term use. Its dense yet porous structure is ideal for dark teas, rounding out their flavors and enhancing their depth.
- ▸ Dignified & spacious The pot has a generous, open belly, making it exceptionally well‑suited for ripe pu’er and black teas (heicha), which benefit from the clay’s heat retention and the vessel’s ample room for leaf expansion. The overall impression is one of refined dignity—classic, functional, and quietly elegant.
✧ Seasoning & care — Rinse with pure water after each session; avoid detergents. The Hongqing Cinnabar Clay is especially responsive to dark teas. With regular use, the reddish‑brown hue will deepen to a brilliant red, and the surface will develop a warm, jade‑like patina.
