Liufang Lianzi Teapot

240 cc — Jiangpo Ni (a Cinnabar Clay variant) · Hexagonal lotus seed form · Round-to-square fusion

The Liufang Lianzi (Hexagonal Lotus Seed) teapot is a square adaptation of the classic round Lianzi (lotus seed) form. While retaining the plump, generous spirit of the original, this version transforms every element into a soft hexagonal shape. The body and lid are rendered in “soft hexagon” (hun liufang) — crisp edges blended with gentle curves, achieving a rare balance between the structural rigor of square ware and the warm fluidity of round ware. This demanding form requires exceptional skill, and contemporary artisan Liu Ye executes it with masterful precision.

Six‑sided drooping ear
“Heaven pressing earth” lid structure
  • ▸ Soft hexagonal mastery Each of the six facets is not completely flat but subtly concave in the center. This gentle curve—barely noticeable at first glance—gives the whole pot a lively, refined elegance, preventing the square form from feeling rigid.
  • ▸ Perfect fullness The lid surface and the body share a harmonious swell. The lid rim is slightly thicker, the mouth rim slightly thinner, creating the classic “heaven pressing earth” (tian ya di) fit—secure and visually satisfying.
  • ▸ Unified hexagonal details The spout and handle naturally follow the six‑sided theme. Even the small drooping ear (chui er) at the handle base is rendered as a hexagon, demonstrating Liu Ye’s commitment to cohesive design.
  • ▸ Fine clay with金沙银线 The Jiangpo Ni clay is exceptionally smooth and dense, fired to a warm orange‑brown. It contains fine golden and silver sand grains that glint subtly under light—a signature of high‑grade ore from Huanglongshan.
  • ▸ Demanding craftsmanship The Liufang Lianzi is notoriously difficult to make because it requires each of the six divided surfaces to merge seamlessly with the spherical overall shape. A single uneven facet ruins the entire silhouette. Liu Ye’s execution here is impeccable: the transitions are clean, the internal tension is palpable, and the pot feels both sturdy and delicate in hand.
Seasoning & care — Rinse with pure water after each session; avoid detergents. The fine sand grains will become more prominent with use, and the clay will develop a warm, oily patina. Ideal for oolong, black tea, or aged pu’er.
